The role of the birth documentarian

I am glad to share with my clients and friends information on other birth professionals I have worked with and trust. Aimee Hilario, brilliant birth documentarian, is one such person. Here is her own description of what she does. -- Angela

One amazing reason to hire a birth documentarian is to be able to have your entire birth story captured by a seasoned storyteller on film. These are images you can enjoy for a lifetime, as well as share with your babies when they are not babies anymore!

As a woman who has both been in labor and witnessed other women giving birth, I know we are usually focused on more important things; we cannot really seize everything else going on around us at the time. You may plan to count on your support system to take pictures for you; but at the time you will most likely need them to be more attentive to other needs. Then, later on, you will discover that you do not have those perfect shots of the experience as you remember it.

Something that I have heard from different clients is that they loved seeing the things going on with their support team that they wouldn’t have known was happening otherwise. I usually also include details like the room number, the clock with the time of delivery, a favorite nurse, and other details that may otherwise be overlooked or forgotten.

The journey into parenthood, whether it be for the first time or the fifth, is amazing! Each birth is unique and adds a different dynamic to a family. I am truly honored to be a part of the birth of a child, whether it be as emotional and/or physical support, or a fly-on-the-wall documentarian.

Birth documentation is seeing your story from a different lens.

What’s included?

  • a meet up prior to delivery.
  • on call availability from 4 weeks prior to your due date.
  • the option of documentation from beginning of active labor to an hour postpartum.
  • the option of one or two edited videos of your birth story (one full version, one social media friendly version) with music of your choice.
  • a flash drive with both edited and unedited photos for you to print at your convenience.
  • the option of printed photos or albums.

When to expect the goods

The photos and videos will be completely ready between 4 and 6 weeks after delivery. Usually the photos are ready much earlier, but clients like to get everything together. If you are interested in peeking at a few pictures to share with family or social media, I can send you some edited shots via email.

Privacy of client photos and videos
I will never share any images unless I have written consent from the client for the specific image to be shared.

Not into birth photography?
I also offer maternity photos and “first 48” newborn photos, as well as full newborn shoots. The “First 48” shots are within the first 48 hours of your baby’s life; these are meant to capture those first sweet moments with your little one.
